BPI Direct BanKo, Inc., A Savings Bank (BanKo), the microfinance arm of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), and Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF), the social development arm of the Jollibee Group, continue to strengthen their partnership to support Filipino onion farmers through accessible and sustainable financing under the Foundation’s Farmer Entrepreneurship Program (FEP). The collaboration aims to help improve farmers’ productivity, increase their income, and create long-term growth opportunities for local farming communities.

Under BanKo’s Farmer Financing Program, eligible borrowers must be Filipino farmers aged 23 to 67 upon loan maturity, own a mobile phone, and have no adverse credit bureau record. Applicants must also be members of a cooperative or association that has served as a supplier of Jollibee Group for at least two consecutive years.

Farmers supported by JGF’s FEP can access financing solutions tailored to the unique needs of smallholder farmers, enabling them to purchase seeds, fertilizers, equipment, and other essential farm inputs, as well as support land preparation and harvesting activities. By combining market access opportunities with timely financial support, the partnership helps farmers expand production, meet quality standards, improve yields, and access stable markets such as the Jollibee Group.

“Through this initiative with Jollibee Group Foundation, we continue to strengthen our commitment to supporting Filipino farmers by providing accessible and sustainable financing solutions tailored to their needs,” said Rod Mabiasen, Jr., BanKo President.

To date, the collaboration has already supported over 200 farmers, with aggregate loan releases amounting to Php 24.8 million across key agricultural areas such as San Jose, Nueva Ecija, Tagudin, Ilocos Sur, and Candon, Ilocos Sur.

BanKo also ensures efficient loan processing and disbursement so farmers can receive funds in time for planting seasons.

The initiative directly addresses the persistent credit gap faced by many Filipino farmers, particularly those who remain unbanked or underfinanced. Limited access to formal financing often prevents farmers from investing in quality inputs and modern farming technologies, forcing many to rely on informal lenders with high interest rates. By offering affordable and timely financing, BanKo and JGF aim to help farmers break the cycle of low productivity and strengthen their long-term financial stability.

HOUSE trial spokesperson and Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong on Tuesday described a purported Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing involving 18 alleged former bodyguards of ex-congressman Zaldy Co as a last-minute effort to divert public attention from the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Z. Duterte.

“To me, this is a last-minute effort, again, to divert the attention of the public,” Alonto Adiong said in an interview with ANC Headstart.

The Senate had already formally convened as an impeachment court and is scheduled to hold a pre-trial conference on June 18 ahead of the start of trial proceedings on July 6.

Alonto Adiong stressed that the Senate’s constitutional priority is now the impeachment trial.

“The constitutional priority should be the impeachment trial because the Senate has already convened as an impeachment court,” he said.

“And therefore, as a matter of constitutional duty, the priority now of the Senate is to hear the Articles of Impeachment.”

The controversy stemmed from a supposed June 16 Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing promoted online by former congressman and former Cabinet official Mike Defensor.

However, the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee, chaired by Sen. Erwin Tulfo, said no such hearing had been scheduled or authorized and urged the public to disregard announcements claiming otherwise.

The committee said the announcement was made without its authority and approval and “categorically rejects the misinformation being circulated online.”

The management of Doublegem EDSA Garden Events Place announced that the gathering would no longer proceed as scheduled.

The venue likewise clarified that it had no affiliation with the organizers, participants or subject matter of the event.

Alonto Adiong said the Senate committee’s disavowal of the event reinforced his view that the activity was not an official hearing.

“We take cue from the current leadership in the Senate right now. The chairperson of the Blue Ribbon Committee, Sen. Tulfo, said that this is not a sanctioned committee hearing,” Alonto Adiong said.

“Meaning to say, there’s no committee hearing scheduled today,” he added.

Alonto Adiong said the effort appeared intended to revive allegations previously raised by 18 individuals who claimed lawmakers and other personalities received cash-filled suitcases. He was among those named in the allegations, which he has repeatedly denied.

The lawmaker said the accusations were aimed at undermining the credibility of the House prosecution panel.

“Number one, cast doubts on the integrity of the House prosecution team. Because there are members in the House prosecution teams who are also included in their list, including me,” he said.

Alonto Adiong also accused the organizers of trying to confuse the public and divert attention from the impeachment proceedings.

“Number two, I think this is just a tactic, again, an effort to divert the attention of the public, and also to muddle the water,” Alonto Adiong said.

 SM ensures sustainable water use through advanced recycling and rainwater harvesting systems. In 2025, sewage treatment plants in its 89 malls recycle an estimated 6.6 million cubic meters of property wastewater for non-potable use. The rainwater treatment facility in SM Baguio innovatively harvests and treats rainwater collected during the wet season and transforms it into water for kitchen and tenant use.

As a key customer touchpoint in water management, faucets also regulate the outflow of water for every use. SM’s investments in "push delay" faucets create sustainable operations to strengthen water conservation. These faucets save water by preventing it from being left running by restricting water flow through a certain window of time.

Technology then paved the way for enhanced conservation, and SM started using no-touch, sensor type faucets in 2015, far before the sanitary restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sensor type faucets help save water by automatically shutting outflow of water once the sensor does not detect a user. Additionally, these types of faucets typically require less water pressure, which also reduces water waste. Significant investments in systems such as sensor faucets also reduce wear and tear on fixtures and equipment, resulting in long-term savings and improved water conservation.

With its implementation, SM saw a 59% reduction in water waste, translating to saving the equivalent of a 1.5-liter bottle of water per user using the faucet over just 7 seconds.
