SM Prime Holdings (SMPHI) recently announced its support for the global search for women leaders in disaster resilience.

For the second consecutive year, SMPHI is sponsoring Women’s International Network on Disaster Risk Reduction (WIN DRR) Leadership Awards, a flagship program of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

SMPHI Vice President for Corporate Compliance Liza B. Silerio said that the support is aligned with the company’s drive to recognize women’s leadership in disaster risk reduction. “This is important in inspiring other women to fully and effectively participate in promoting gender equality and empowerment while building our collective resilience.”

UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction Mami Mizutori expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “The awards highlight the key role of women as leaders and agents of change in building resilience and actively participating in the creation and implementation of DRR strategies, policies, plans and programs in their regions. Their stories reflect the diversity of solutions required to meet the converging challenges of accelerating climate change and disasters in the region.”

Have you noticed lately the visibility of our police officers? Well if you do, these are the initiatives of the new Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief, PGen Rodolfo S. Azurin, Jr. Currently, the new PNP Chief's program is bound to Malasakit, Kaayusan, Kapayapaan tungo sa Kaunlaran.

I believed their visibility is really important today since the face-to-face classes had already started and we truly need the presence of these police officers to keep not only our children safe but the whole community.

The "Ber" months had started already and we all know what usually happens during this time of the year. While people are merry-making others are money-making by doing illegal activities such as holdups, snatching, and scams.

Though there is the not so good perception about the police officers, we cannot void that there are still more police officers who do good or what we call "mababait" just like what PLtCol Dexter Versola mentioned in our lunch meeting with him a week ago. He mentioned that our Police Officers are naturally mababait, and some needs to be reformed.

PLt Col Dexter Versola is the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO)'s Spokesperson, he is the main Police Officer who faces the media when there's a need for inquiries, clarification, and interviews with regards to the activities of the NCRPO under the leadership of the new Regional Director, PBGen Jonnel C. Estomo. 

In line with the programs of the PNP, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO's) new Regional Director, PBGen Jonnel C. Estomo, enforces and implements the S.A.F.E. program, which he used when he was still the Provincial Director in Cavite, then it was later on used in Region 5. The SAFE Program stands for Seen Appreciated Felt Extraordinary.

The actions of the Police should be extraordinary.

PLtCol Versola gave the viewpoint of the current leadership which is the "rule of law." All programs, projects, and activities of NCRPO are based on pertaining laws. If the previous leadership is aggressive this time it's calmer and always bound to the rule of law.
Another piece of information shared by PLtCol Versola is the quad concept of operation of the PNP.
Prevent crime by law enforcement operations.
Preempt crime through police intelligence.
Investigate crime through the investigation directorate.
Organize the police and community through Police Community Relations.

Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines continues to sustain hygiene promotion and access as public schools resume face-to-face classes this August. P&G recently donated back-to-school COVID-19 hygiene kits to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for distribution to over 389, 921 students nationwide.

The donation marks another milestone in P&G and USAID’s efforts to support underserved communities and protect them from the ongoing risk of COVID-19. Included in the packages are P&G manufactured medical-grade face masks, and hygiene kits containing Safeguard body wash, soap, and hand sanitizers.

“We are one with the country in promoting safe and healthy communities and we support educational institutions as they resume face-to-face classes this year,” says Anna Legarda, Communications Director of P&G Philippines. “P&G’s partnership with USAID enables us to bring our brands’ superior health and hygiene benefits to more communities and be a force for good in the country,” she adds.

Reports from early this year stated that the pandemic magnified long-standing health system ills, raising the importance of safeguarding the public through proper hygiene and infection prevention and control to mitigate the risk of disease transmission.

Breaking stereotypes

Being the daughter of a professional basketball legend and growing up in a family of athletes, it seemed destined for Jamie to become a star karateka. However, from an early age, both her father and mother - who is also a seasoned lawyer - taught Jamie the importance of choosing her own path and instilled in her the belief that she can always be more than your stereotypical jock.

Choosing to not limit herself, Jamie decided to pursue goals in both sports and academics. The journey was not without its challenges as she had to learn how to balance the many responsibilities she had as a student while keeping up with the discipline of an athlete.

“I remember, in my preparation for the SEA Games back in 2019, I only had 5 months of real training as I was already in the last months of my senior year. On top of that, I was out of Karate for 4 years so training was twice as rigorous. Although it was difficult, I was able to power through it because I knew that the stakes were also high,” shared Jamie.

With her family’s continuous support, she was inspired to break past the mold and prove that she can indeed excel on and off the mat. Still one of her proudest achievements was winning both a gold medal in Karate during the 2019 SEA Games and graduating Summa Cum Laude in UP Diliman with a degree in BS Mathematics. Today she is focused on furthering her studies in London while awaiting for the start of training for the next SEA Games in 2023.

“Coming from being a part of MILO® AAK and now with my extended partnership with the MILO® family, I hope to inspire kids who are faced by the same barriers as mine to be brave in breaking out of those stereotypes and in paving their own paths. Their time to prove themselves will come,” added Jaime.

Running through life’s obstacles

Before Coach Rio became an international marathoner and one of the top running coaches in the country, his road to success was paved from humble beginnings. Coming from a big family that struggled in putting food on the table, Coach Rio sorely lacked the financial support that most young runners his age needed to pursue a professional career.

- At times, all young Rio had was an unwavering pagpupursige and discipline - and that was enough. He never once missed training, even on the days he had no running gear or equipment, and learned early on that he needed to work thrice as hard to achieve his one clear goal: be a successful athlete to provide for his family.

“One time when I was in elementary school, there was a trial race that I really wanted to join. Ang kaso sabi ng coach ko noon, hindi ka pa ready - pero makulit ako. I still showed up during the competition day and patiently waited. Buti na lang, one athlete didn’t show up so my coach gave me a chance. I proved to him that I deserved it by winning it all,” shared Coach Rio. That win opened the doors for Coach Rio’s future success in the sport.

“Time management and determination were key for me. Even when I was young, my life was all about school and training. I knew what I wanted and I was focused on my goal despite knowing that it would come with a lot of sacrifices,” emphasized Coach Rio.

For Coach Rio, being a part of the MILO® Philippines family has played a huge part in his grit journey. From joining the MILO® Marathons and using his winnings to support himself in school, to now being the main organizer for all their events nationwide and a familiar face in the new MILO® TV commercial, it has come full circle. Molding the next generation of athletes

Japoy started his journey in sports at a MILO® Sports Program. At just 12 years old and being known as the teenage heartthrob whose face was on every MILO® pack, Japoy recognized the responsibility he had as thousands of other kids were aspiring to be just like him. This became an important driving factor for Japoy to pursige in succeeding in Taekwondo.

Now at 36 and a professional coach himself, Japoy uses this experience in shaping the next generation of strong-willed athletes and giving them a platform to become an inspiration for the generation after them. In this extension of his partnership with MILO®, Japoy also aims to share this with more kids nationwide. “Although not all athletes are born gifted in a sport, they are molded through the years with experience and the right pagpupursige to succeed. As part of its mission to better the lives of the underserved through technology, Shopee recently partnered with the Luzon Clean Water Development Corporation, Indoplas, and Metro Bangued Water District to provide aid to those affected by the magnitude 5.2 earthquake which impacted key areas of Abra last 28 August.

At present, electricity plays a huge role in our daily lives. We use electricity in almost everything that we do. It is the power that runs our machines and equipment. I remember my childhood days when brown-out and black-out, were the usual thing that happens in our community. It's hard, especially when you're studying for the school exam on the following day.

It was a struggle before, fortunately, brown-outs are rare. I think it only happens when there's a situation that needs to be fixed. Anyway, I'm here to share what transpired during our lunch date with some of the executives of Meralco and One Meralco Foundation.

It was a lunch date with the Vice President for Corporate Communication of Meralco, Mr. Joe Zaldarriaga, and Mr. Jeffrey Tarayao, the President of One Meralco Foundation. When I saw Mr. Zaldarriaga, I said to myself that he looks familiar. Then when he started talking.... ooohhh that was him. The person that we usually see on television in Meralco commercials, is the one that gives updates about our bill consumption for the period. That's Tito Joe. 

Anyway, we met with them because they have some updates to share about Meralco and One Meralco Foundation.

Mr. Zaldarriaga shares that Meralco considering the opportunities of the current times which is the use of social media, thus they are adapting to reach more customers. We all know that nowadays, social media is a thing for everyone.

During our interview, Mr. Tarayao shared their lighting project stories that occupies most of their time, going to the community, giving the currently available energy source, which is the solar-powered panels, and other possible help they can extend.

One Meralco Foundation, under the leadership of Mr. Tarayao, seeks out these electricity-deprived communities to bring the hope of light. Mr. Tarayao explained also during the interview that they are thankful to their network of partners who knows about the project. With this, people, agencies, and organizations share information with One Meralco Foundation for communities in need of the lighting project and with this they review and pick which one does need the lighting project the most. 

Right now, One Meralco Foundation is busy distributing solar-powered lamps. They have given a figure of around 3,000 solar lamps to fisherfolks and forest rangers. The foundation also have scholarships for the engineers to be and also the nurse and doctors to be.

AQ Prime's latest film to stream online, "Pula ang Kulay ng Gabi," is all about the reality of life in the lower class of society and that most of the struggles are drawn to criminality to overcome poverty or at least feed the grinding hunger. 

Inspired by the story of the notorious and famous group, the Acetylene Gang, thriving in the underground world where they operate through a complex activity using their skills in burrowing in the dark to reach vaults containing large amounts of money. All done unsuspectedly and discretely to accomplish the deed. 

If you have been listening to news and reading the newspapers in 2014 or earlier, the Acetylene Gang has been the center of every story from different publications. The group started their evil deeds in the year 2000.

The film is directed by Jojo Nadela and the casts are Aljur Abrenica and Yana Fuentes together with a batch top-notch actors, Soliman Cruz, Elijah Filamor, Rob Sy, Zia Zamora and more. Some of the actors did an excellent portrayal of their characters, though there were cursing and others stereotypical picture of the community it is still on the level of tolerable words to deliver and render what is ought to be shown.

SM Prime Holdings, Inc., one of Southeast Asia’s leading integrated property developers and leading conservation organization World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines have entered a collaboration in adopting a more robust reporting framework to address the climate crisis.   

This is a major partnership of WWF with a Philippine company towards the development of a bespoke program towards decarbonization.

The first phase of CBPI involves gauging where SM Prime stands in its sustainability initiatives and setting a science-based target in line with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. #PascualLove , PascualLab’s campaign for its milestone 75thAnniversary was chosen as one of the Excellence Awardees among 849 entries.  The campaign won for effectively achieving its communication objectives through the strategic use of platforms to reach stakeholders, efficient management, consistent messaging, and communication innovation.

Roel, Shopee Xpress Partner Rider (TransOrient Agency): A hardworking father who strives to provide

Roel’s journey with Shopee Xpress started when he joined the TransOrient Agency and was placed in the Bacoor Hub. Prior to that, he admitted that he was struggling to make ends meet. By becoming a Shopee Xpress partner rider, he was able to provide for his family and send his children to school. “Kapag ako sumuko pa, paano na sila? Wala namang lalaban sa pamilya natin kung hindi tayo,” Roel says.

Roel shared that one of his happiest moments was when his son asked him to wear his Shopee Xpress uniform at his graduation ceremony. Virginia, Shopee Bayanihan: Typhoon Odette Beneficiary: Conquering fear as one community

Virginia is one of the many beneficiaries of Shopee Bayanihan’s Typhoon Odette Support. She shared that her experience with the typhoon left her frightened and worried about the future of her family and her home. “I was shivering at the thought of what could happen because both my husband and I are sick. I didn’t know what to do. All I could do was pray for the strong winds to stop.” she says.

Mark and Angel nearly lost their daughter to biliary atresia, a rare condition that affected her liver and required her to undergo an expensive procedure abroad. Before taking their business online, they struggled to generate sales. “May mga araw po talaga na wala kaming benta, at sobrang lungkot po namin ni partner nun,” shared Mark.
