Numbers hold a special place in my heart, and it seems my oldest son shares the same love for number, which is Math. While, my youngest son and his father share a different passion - the world of art. Gelo, my youngest son, loves math at first, but as he moves up to higher grade level, the challenges becomes more complex, that's when Gelo started to struggle a bit with Math. This is where his big brother steps in, he tutors Gelo. However, there’s a difference between classroom learning and brotherly guidance. So, this is my problem these days.

Early this week I attended an event about ALOHA. ALOHA, stands for Abacus Learning Of Higher Arithmetic, is a brain development program specifically designed for children ages 4 to 13. It was founded in 1993 by Mr. Loh Mun Sung, who adapted and developed the concept based on the Abacus Computational methods from China and Taiwan. The program was initially introduced in Malaysia and gained popularity, leading to its expansion to other countries.

Rheana Yasmin Campos, who achieved the prestigious title of Grand Champion at the ALOHA Mental Arithmetic International Competition held in Malaysia last month.

The Philippine team bagged prestigious titles in the ALOHA Mental Arithmetic International Competition at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Center in Kula Lumpur on July 30. Darylyn Faith Fabilane, 11, from Rizal and Rheana Yasmin Campos, 10, from Caloocan emerged grand champions of the competition that drew 700 students from Bangladesh, Croatis, China, Canada, cambodia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Panama, Taiwan, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Venezuela, and the Philippines. Jake Conner Yao, 9, form San Juan City was crowned champion while Ryan Warren Merdegia, 9, of Papanga, brought home the second runner-up title.

Ivy Sato, chief executive officer of ALOHA Mental Arithmetic Philippines, said the recent competition shows that young Filipinos can unlock their full potential and make a significant impact in the global arena as long as they are given adequate support back home.

Here are some information about ALOHA

ALOHA offers a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on enhancing a child’s mental arithmetic skills and overall brain development. It provides training that enables children to perform calculations swiftly and accurately without relying on external tools such as calculators, computers, or other gadgets. The program utilizes specific teaching methods to help children improve their ability to solve math problems using their mental abilities, regardless of the complexity of the numbers involved.

ALOHA Mental Arithmetic goes beyond mathematical skills and targets a child’s IQ and EQ (emotional intelligence). The program aims to assist children in completing their homework more efficiently, developing exceptional mental calculation skills, improving problem-solving abilities, enhancing their capacity to remember information and visualizing conceptual maps in their minds. By engaging in ALOHA, childrend can streghthen their congnitive abilities and build confidence in their math skills, ultimately alleviating Math Anxiety.
